ResumoThe analysis of ten-years simulation of present-day climate (1961-1970) over South America using the RegCM model nested within the HadAMH global atmospheric model is presented here. The main objective is to analyze the simulated climatology and interanual variability in some regional areas over South America. The RegCM simulation domain includes almost all South America and it has 60 km of horizontal resolution with 23 vertical sigma levels. The air temperature and precipitation simulated are compared with the observational data set. The mean circulation at lower and high levels was also compared with NCEP reanalysis and HadAMH climatologies. The preliminary results indicate that the simulated mean seasonal values of precipitation and air temperature have an interanual variability comparable with the observational data set over the South America domain. Two subdomain were chosen for the regional analyses: one covering the Amazon Basin (AMZ) and another over Southeast Brazil (SDE). Comparison between the simulated and observational data was also carried out in the subdomains and it is shown that they are in good agreement as well. However, along of the year the air temperature in the AMZ subdomain seems to be colder and the precipitation during the summer is systematic smaller than the observational data. The simulation over SDE shows that both the mean seasonal precipitation and air temperature interanual variability are very similar to the observational data, with a small seasonal negative bias for both variables. In general, for both subdomains the model was able to capture the precipitation and air temperature seasonal variability quite well. These results have motivated further simulations with the RegCM using simulated data from future climate scenarios and the results will be presented elsewhere.
